Standing apart from your competitors, especially for small businesses, is very important to your business survival.  Because March is National Ideas Month, a local marketing and advertising firm offers the following “ideas” to accomplish this.

The amount of advertising dollars your business has to spend is less important than standing apart from your competitors and being the first in the mind of your potential customers.

The smartest approach in accomplishing this is by doing research and brainstorming for new ideas.  You’re looking for ideas in advertising copy, marketing ideas, new sales, promotions and events.  Brainstorm better ways to service your customers in order to receive those referrals that will keep you in business! The list goes on.

Start by talking to your current customers and then employees.  Ask your customers what they want and what they currently like or dislike about your service.  Let your employees in on what you’re doing and write down their ideas!

You never know when or where an idea may strike.  A small tablet kept handy, no matter what industry you belong to, is a good idea in itself.

Write down ALL of your ideas! Don’t think too much about how “crazy” an idea may be. Often, what seems like a crazy idea can be the most beneficial outcome for business growth.

Be careful not to be “too creative”.  Some crazy ideas are just that – crazy!  Use common sense and poll your close friends, family and colleagues first to judge by their reaction if you should follow up with this idea or not.

Be first.  It’s better to be known for an idea first then to copy a competitor’s idea. Yes, even if you “make it better.”

Remember, it is easiest to be creative and think rationally when you are relaxed and stress-free.  As a small business ourselves, we understand how hard this one can be, but that’s a topic for another time!
