“It all depends on who you know,” is a familiar quote to many. However, more realistically, it’s not about who you know . . . but who knows you!

Networking is critical. People prefer to do business with those they know and trust. Often times, they don’t know who you are, what you do or that you are available to them to do it. There’s no better way to accomplish this then by networking with those around you.

There are numerous opportunities to network within your community. Volunteer in charities, groups & organizations, clubs, church, community events & committees or your Chamber of Commerce.  Utilize the internet to find trade and specialty associations. National associations can be just as beneficial as state and local depending on your trade.

Remember the importance of networking on a day-to-day basis.  Whether you are a job seeker, current employee, sales associate, independent professional, owner or manager of a small or significantly sized business, or if you are looking to start your own business, potential leads come from anywhere.

BranchOut Consulting, LLC a local marketing firm, offers the following networking tips:

Unlearn shyness. Think friendly. Be the person you would like to meet and talk to.

Networking is not just about helping number one: ask yourself what you can do for the person that you have just met.  After all, that is what you hope they are asking themselves about you.

Understand that relationships take time to build.  Make random “hello” calls.

Take the time to introduce two people whom you feel may connect.

Think quality not quantity. The number of people you meet is not as important as the quality of the contact.  Who are the influencers and decision makers?

Diversify your network. In the financial community, a diversified portfolio is preferable. The same is true with your network.
